A Piscina do Parque Lage
Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
January 24th of 2015
15 x 25 x 12 m

January 24th 2015 witnessed the first show in Rio de Janeiro of the collective, Penique productions. The venue of choice was the iconic palatial institution, Escola de Artes Visuais Parque Lage, in Rio’s botanical gardens. Naturally, the building’s focal point - a colonnaded, open-air pool centred within the schools impressive architecture - was to be the site of the installation.
A giant orange inflatable occupied the entirety of the space, invading everything, the pool included. The hot Brazilian summer air, helped by a fan, inflated the balloon, making it rise, expand and almost fly away. The balloon hugged and enveloped its surroundings, mimicking the arches, columns and decorative architectural elements.
From outside, an imposing reddish light permeated the inflatable. It invaded the surrounding colonnaded corridors, contrasting heavily with the stone walls and the bright green of the majestic botanical gardens.
